How to Know If You’re Ready for Therapy

A really common thought is, ”I don’t know if things are ‘bad enough’ for therapy."

There’s still this myth that therapy is only for people in crisis. The truth is, therapy can be helpful at any point in your life. Not just when things feel like they’re falling apart.

In fact, therapy often works best before things feel completely unmanageable. It’s a place to slow down, sort through what’s weighing on you, and feel more grounded in yourself.

So how do you know if it might be time? Here are some signs to consider:

You Feel Stuck, Even If Life Looks “Fine” on the Outside

You’re doing the things like showing up to work, keeping up appearances, maybe even checking all the boxes. And something still feels... off. Like you’re disconnected or just going through the motions.

Therapy can help you tune into what’s beneath that feeling and figure out where you want to go from here.

You’re Overwhelmed More Than You’d Like to Admit

Stress, anxiety, or burnout might have become part of your daily routine. Even rest doesn’t feel restorative anymore. You might find yourself snapping at important people to you, feeling emotionally drained, or losing interest in the things that used to matter.

That level of chronic overwhelm is a signal, not a weakness. And it’s something we can work through together.

You’ve Been Through Something Big and Haven’t Had the Space to Process It

Our life experiences shape our experiences of reality and contribute to how we view ourselves, the world, and others. Whether it was a breakup, a loss, a health issue, a major transition, or something that shook your sense of safety. Big life changes can quietly reshape us. And they often leave emotional pieces that haven’t had a chance to settle.

Therapy creates space to process what happened, understand how it’s impacted you, and begin healing in a way that feels safe and supported.

You’re Tired of Being So Hard on Yourself

Many of the patients I work with share a common thread: a harsh inner critic that never seems satisfied. That voice might push you to succeed, but it also leaves you feeling exhausted and never “enough.”

In therapy, we gently examine where that voice came from and learn how to replace it with something more compassionate and sustainable. Spoiler Alert: while that sounds simple, it takes a bit of hard work. Spoiler Alert: We will do it together.

You’re Just Curious

Sometimes, people seek therapy not because of a specific problem but because they want to understand themselves better. They’re interested in their own patterns, motivations, relationships, and emotional landscape.

That kind of curiosity is more than enough reason to begin.

So… Are You Ready?

There’s no perfect moment to begin therapy.

If any part of you is wondering, “Could therapy help me feel more like myself again?” That’s your sign.

Therapy is a place to be fully human. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply seeking more meaning, it’s a space where we can work together toward the kind of life you want to build.
